I was working for the Houston Police Department when I interviewed Peter regarding a police report (he was not in trouble!) He was a lovely man and we became friends over tea at his hone. Omg Dad, I’m heartbroken by you leaving us. I’m writing this after the funeral and so saying my final goodbyes. I thank you eternally for the spirit you gave to us. Everything is ok, just feel it. I have quite a few great memories of Peter. He once orchestrated a prank in cahoots with my wife. They had me running back and forth to my shop in 30 below temperatures, to fix a piece of leather work i was making. Hed advise me on how to improve something, them tell me to go do it. So after doing this a half dozen times late into the evening. I finally caught on to there mischeif. But my fondest memory was the day he asked for my help. He was no longer able to carve leather to the level of proficiency he demanded. He had a boot top order to complete for his good friend Dave Wheeler, and asked if i could do it. I was honored he chose me to fill the void. He sent me a packet of leather and notes about how it needed to be done. It was on this project for Peter that i learned so much about him and what made him tick. I will be eternally grateful for the guidance he has provided me throughout the year. The leathercraft world will have a huge void without his presence.

I have had the greatest privilege to have learned a great deal from Peter in one on one instruction. My grandfather Peter loved to make art and leather work. I still remember him posting leather to us. My brother and I loved making designs on the leather. It was one of the most vivid memories that reminded me of him. Because of him i had become intrigued with drawing and art, Now whenever I draw and paint I will always think of him. But most importantly i had gone to see him before he had passed. He would always greet me with the biggest smile honestly just being there with him was enough. He looked like the most happiest man in the world . His passing was so sudden and upsetting but I will always be thankful to say my goodbyes. He was the best grandfather to ever live and he will always be in my heart forever

The first time I met Peter he was coming to teach a class at my guild. I had recently broken my right arm. It was mending well, but using a mallet to pound on leather was somewhat excruciating. I also had to use a scalpel to cut fine pieces of leather, also hard for me to do at that point. Peter saw me through the class. Perhaps he felt sorry for me because at the end of class, he gave me the piece that he had made during that time. I learned a new skill and gained a new friend that weekend.

My name is Michael Dockery. I worked with Peter in Rothmans Head Office in Sydney in the 1980’s; Peter was in the Art Department of course, and I was the Marketing Administration Manager. I have many glorious memories of Peter, but there are two particular memories that will stay with me forever. I am originally from Ireland, and my father died suddenly in Dublin in 1982. There was so much I wanted to do for my mother, but the huge distance between us made all that impossible. I decided to put together a memorial of the memories I had with my dad, and to send it to my mother. I gathered all the text and photos that I wanted to include, but then I wondered how and where I should start. Peter passed my office and saw that I was upset and confused. I told Peter what I was trying to achieve; he gathered up all the photos and the text I had scribbled out and scattered around my desk and said: “Leave it to me”. The very next day, Peter handed me a leather-bound Book; it contained all the photos and the scribbled text that was now professionally typed, and I immediately sent it off to my mother. No one had ever been that kind to me before that day, and no one has ever been that kind to me since that day. I wept openly that night as I thought about what this blessed man had done for me; my mother treasured my memorial until the day she passed away, 16 years later. In later years after my Rothmans days, I opened my own Piano Academy in Sydney and Peter helped me with the design and production of my business logo. I’m happy and proud to say that the Academy was hugely successful, and no doubt Peter’s contribution played a significant part in that success. Peter will now be a part of my daily prayers. I am in total shock we both owned Xk 120 and Xk 140 jaguars. I used to visit him regularly at the art studio he shared in parramatta Australia until he left for America. I bought one of his molding tools around the same time. I still have the envelope it came in. It was hand addressed like the finest calligraphy. I use the tool in just about everything I make. Thinking about how to go about this, I can only think Peter would say we met exactly when we were meant to…no earlier or later. Early on, Peter saw something in me that many overlooked in passing. I can only chuckle but think that he might have very well have seen a little of his own madness, and was curious what was in the other side. From the very beginning, we were friends, and I would always be entertained by his playful, but always helpful ribbing. He, from the start, seemed to know exactly how to fuel my fire, to get the best result. We spent as much time talking about life in general, as we did leatherwork. I have the honor of being able to call him so many more things besides just a mentor. A few of them, I’ve shared here, but the feeling I get even while writing this, I’m able to take with me until it’s my time. I can only hope to leave the same impression on at least one person, as he has the multitudes. Peter always thought his work should be used for its intended purpose so he allowed Pietra and I to pop it on one of the ponies to give it a spin one day. Well you can imagine how that went as the pony decided to take off down the paddock thinking it was a rodeo and bucking up a storm. When I first started working with leather I was advised he sold a smaller blade for tooling. Instead of just a simple sale, he went out of his way to provide me with the information I would need to create great pieces of leather. Dear Peter, I thoroughly enjoyed being able to attend several of your classes. You were always so polite and friendly. Your leatherwork was truly special. You planned every lesson down to the smallest detail, and each time you showed us new techniques as well as tips and tricks. You were always so helpful and up for anything. In one class, I showed you the bag I had just finished. It depicted a matador scene, and you commented that the bull's testicles were a bit too large. In the same class, we were working on a butterfly design. Suddenly, you said my butterfly was something very special. I was surprised and wondered, "My butterfly?" When I looked at it more closely, it all became clear: While I had been busy with something else, you had shaped a small testicle and glued it to the abdomen of my butterfly. Every time I look at this piece, it reminds me of you. Your death is a great loss for the leatherwork community and, of course, for your family. You were always very proud of your children. Rest in peace. You are now free from worry and pain. Say hello to all the other leather artists who have passed away before you. You will remain unforgettable; I fondly remember your kind and humorous nature. I wish your family and children much strength to overcome your death.

I have another fond memory of Peter. During one of his classes, I asked him if he would create a picture of my German Shepherd. To my great delight, he agreed, and I sent him an email with photos of my dog. He handed me the picture at the next class; it was even more beautiful than I had ever dreamed. I met Peter one day as i was putting some grass down near his home. He wanted me to hrlp him with his yard. That was a simple beginning of a multiyrar friendship. Initially I only knew him as a leather guy who had a nice studio. His humility through our friendship was a giftbto my wife snd me. We had him over for a meal many times, and after he hot sick we brought occasional plates of food to him. Always very thankful snd gracious.
